Ooo I want to play. Let's see. I am a huge dork that has pretty much lived in a bubble for most of my life. Or how bout that I know next to nothing about women, so little that it is scary. Oh, and it's dark right now, so there is no sunlight outside.

Very well written and well-thought-out argument which, in my opinion, happens to have completely missed the point. Interesting read nonetheless.

I love Buffy. I watched almost the entirety of the show before I even heard that it was supposedly feminist or not feminist. I was like wait, what? Isn't this just a show about vampires and demons? Sometimes I think people take things too seriously...

Microsoft will never crash and burn. It's not possible when you have no competition to speak of. Plus, Bill Gate's deal with Satan lasts at least until the Seventh Seal is opened.
Right now it seems that Microsoft's greatest competitor is itself; specifically Microsoft Vista versus Microsoft XP. An article I was reading recently about stripped down, low cost laptops said that most can't run Vista due to its insane system requirements. However, Microsoft's most stable OS ever, XP, runs quite well on them. The article ends with the author suggesting that Microsoft end Vista's embarrassing run, slap a pretty new skin on XP, patch up some of the security issues, and re-release it as "Windows Basic".

Indeed, but why would you WANT to? It's like replacing a hemi engine with a little Lada heart that goes takatakataka. Of course, as Zefram seems to think:

Linux is entering the desktop market, too. Firefox is eating IE, OpenOffice is eating Office. I don't know about crashing and burning, but I don't think MS will survive as we know it - at least if I'm not totally stupid and/or reading the signs wrong. I think the open source ethic will become powerful enough that monopolies like MS simply can't function without changing their business attitude. Plus, MS charges huge prices for licenses and doesn't offer much in the way of support, but the market for support is pretty strong these days, and most other companies are charging most of the money in that area rather than for licenses. So I think MS will change, at least in goals and practices, before another 10 or 20 years are out.
In other words, gradual shift over a long time, yes, but crash and burn, I don't think so.
