Liam, the British bombed my grandfather's platoon while they were waded through neck high mud, fighting their way across Holland. His best friend burst into flames before his eye. The Americans aren't the only ones who screw up.
And, actually, I report with great pride that Toronto is targeted by seven Russian nuclear warheads (Or was, anyway). The targets are:
Canadian Forces Base Downsview (<10 KM from me) Metro Hall City Hall Darlington Nuclear Power Plant Pickering Nuclear Power Plant Queen's Park/Ontario Legislature And some factory for cruise missile components.
Probable casualties from this attack: 2 million+ Of course, the detonation height and warhead yield would determine the exact amount of damage to be done.
So there.

The fact that I think has been missed with the War Planners is that Milosevic doesn't care about the Kosovo Albanians. He has driven and contiues to drive them out, so in effect he has already defeated NATO. If you want to bring Milosevic to the bargaining table, you have to get ruthless and hurt him where he cares. Level a few Serbian towns and villages, incur massive amounts of civilian casualities, do to him what he has done to others. If he doesn't change his attitude, then show him what a real genicide is. The War has already started. It shouldn't have, but here it is. The bombing campiagn is only going to do one thing, leave a lot of damage. Serbs and Albanians are still going to hate one another. There isn't going to be a period of appologies for the ethic clensing and for the bombing, and then a giant group hug. Yoguslavia has begun to withdraw troops from Kosovo. NATO heralds this as a victory and proof that the air war is working. I see it as most of the Kosovo population is in Albania and Yugoslavia doesn't need that many troops left in the province anymore. They can be better strategically reposistioned. That's the more logical reason. The best think we can do is stop while we are even.

High level air bombardment is a hopeless tactic to use if indeed it is intended to prevent further clerances of civilans from Kosovo. Only a very low level campaign, supported by ground forces could hope to achieve that. I'm sick of NATO responding to each new devlopment with "Oh, we really didn't mean to drop a cluster bomb on a civilian target. Tragic mistake. We are intensifying our air campaign".
A British MP yesterday made a nice comment that rather than acting like world's policemen NATO now resembled "the gang that can't shoot straight".
I'd like to see a change in tactics. Better to do nothing than to merely add to the numbers being killed by killing the populace of Belgrade. And also don't take any crap from the Chinese. Blowing up their embassy was incompetance for sure, but doesn't give them, dispensation to hypocritically lecture NATO about violating international law or human rights. (c.f.Tibet, Taiwan, dissidents, etc.)

I suggest a three pause in the campaign, with NATO saying nothing. The Serbs will declare victory, and people will go to work again. Find out the busiest hour in downtown Belgrade, and fly a few hundreds planes over their heads at low altitude. Make it loud, sudden, and intimidating. Don't drop any bombs, just scare them. Then give them six hours to withdraw from Kosovo, or else we'll begin smashing Belgrade into ground. And make sure the people know it too. If they refuse, level the city.

Jubilee: With what prestidigitation did you come up with your prognostication?.
Sorry. I just felt like using unnecessarily big words.
How did you come up with your prediction? Phenomenal psychic powers? If so, can you tell me what Pennsylvania's Super Six lottery numbers will be tomorrow? it's worth a quarter million to you if you can, which should be plenty enough to buy you a place in a bomb shelter.
In all seriousness, I am interested in how you came up with that date. For reasons I prefer not to disclose at this time. .
.
personally, I'm beginning to suspect that the whole thing is a diversion to keep people from noticing just how much of our nuclear tech the Chinese now have, and who let them have it.

This whole thing in Kosovo is looking more and more like a global fiasco. The event has shaken or destroyed my faith in many world institutions.
-The UN: deadlocked and useless throughout the whole thing. -Clinton: generally cowardly and incompetent -NATO: has finally proved its total uselessness in a post cold-war world -CIA: First missing the Indian nuclear test, then targeting the Sudanese medicine factory, and now mistaking a clearly labelled embassy for a Serbian ministry. Can they do anything right? -US military: The most powerful and advanced army in the world has taken two months to cause weaken an enemy state.

Errr. I just felt like saying that for some strange reason.
The numbers for the Pennsylvania lottery? ... 16, 28, 45, 12.
(J/K, though if those are the numbers i'll go WAY o_O)
First of Two, as to how I came up with the date, some things about me remain a mystery to the public forum... if you want to know, I suggest you request in an email, and I'll be more than happy to explain it to you. Explaining it here just opens me up to more ridicule.

Awww dammit! Toronto is targeted by nukes? I wonder if west Mississauga is close enough to be affected.
But anyways, Downview is being converted into an entertainment complex, we are probably worse off with Queen's Park intact, and Pickering is probably leaking out enought nuclear waste as it is...
They've gotta pick better targets...
I mean in the movies, only the US gets nuked. In Independence Day we are perfectly fine, monsters never bother attacking us, and in Outbreak a projection of the spread of an extremely contagious virus stops at the US-Can. border.

In Independance Day, the aliens smash other cities around the world, in Britain, China, Austrailia, Africa, and even the Middle East gets vapourized. But no Canada. Guess the Aliens figured that they wanted to learn how to play Hockey.
In Outbreak, the virus also stops at the US-Mexican border too.
Getting back to the Kosovo crisis, the peace process has been knocked by a big dent in the form of the NATO bombing of the Chinese Embassy. Although I do not feel for the victims of this unfortunate attack, I feel that this incident may very well tell the difference between war and peace.

After 1914, the Serbian population was decimated, losing up to 25% of its people. World War II was worse: after being overrun by the Nazis, the Serbs were at the mercy of the Croat puppet regime, the Ustashe. To the Serbs, the Jasenovac deathcamp has the same meaning as "Auschwitz." Meanwhile, they still held back divisions of Nazis, Italians, and Bosnian Muslim SS.
Maybe the Serbs are all right bastards and they all deserve to die, every single one of them, hospital patients, train-passengers, and the make-up girl in the TV studio included, but bombing isn't going to scare these people.
Milosevic is laughing his fat socialist ass off as President Clinton just increases the number of people around the world who hate Americans [hey, another one billion added to that number! Good work, Bill!]
It's the end of the 20th Century; ex-superpower USA needs Russia to handle our foreign relations, former enemies are now silent partner "allies" in this misadventure while former allies have become enemies, NATO has humiliated itself on it's 50th Anniversary, and China has just been given not only a way to dodge espionage charges but also a priceless public relations event to help down-play the Tianamen Square anniversary.

D'ja ever notice how this embassy bombing happened JUST as the scandal over the Chinese nuclear spying, and its ties to the campaign contributions of the Democratic Party was coming to a head?
Now, of course, with this tragedy, China in its oh-so-intense "outrage" can use this as a propaganda ploy to demand a halt to the investigation...
(Is it paranoia, or is it Memorex?)
In this age of satellite photos that can read an effing licence plate, how can you miss a big Chinese flag waving outside an embassy? Old maps? who uses old maps to plan a precision bombing attack? And why is it that the old map shows a dirt lot?

NATO clearly misunderstood the political situation in Serbia and the people there. The whole idea was that There'd be some heavy bombing, the people would get pissed off and turn against Milosevic. WRONG! have they learned nothing from previous wars. Just look at World War 2 with Serbia being invaded by the NAZI's. Did they give up? You also only have to look at the Blitz here in Britain. Invading a country creates a sense of patriotism and a common goal to fight off the enemy. With their own television station, they can also say what they want to stir up hatred.
It showed how desperate NATO were getting when they threatened to bomb the television stations unless the Serbs said nice things about NATO. They bombed it anyway. It shows how bad the war is going.
