It did give Troi something to do, but it made her look like in idiot at the same time, while a low-ranked officer and a noncomm knew and did more. Really how can she not know what would happen when a warp core breached. She had already spent four full years on the flagship (many times on the bridge) when similar events occured.

"Flying around on wires" was not much of an improvement.
