Regardless of originality, the final version doesn't look realistic enough...too many parts and such, with no solid form.

Well, Frank, if it makes feel you any better, DS9 was originally supposed to be an asymmetric pile of equipment put together by various races over a period of thousands of years. But then Berman/Piller remembered that it's got to be something everyone can recognize and easily draw (like the Enterprise), and they instructed the Art Dept to do something different.

Boris: I'm glad things turned out the way they did.
Andrew: FWIW, most complex life is symmetrical.
Elim: I know. This is Star Trek, after all.

But it doesn't have to be a complex biological ship... just a... uhm, biologial ship.

By "complex" I mean "more complex than a jellyfish."

On behalf of the sentient jellyfish of the world, I take offense.
But in the case that that's what you meant, I quietly resign to the Corner of Retracted Statements.

Life on Earth is symetrical. There is no inherent reason that it should be so on other worlds.
(Ok, so there is symetry throughout the universe. But life is a chaotic system, and it is only by chance that the symetrical species have beat out the asymetrical ones. For a good example of an asymetrical intelligent species, read The Mote In God's Eye by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle.)

I can see where they didn't like one and four. As soon as I saw those, I realized he was heavily under the influence of the Jem'Hadar ships. However, it looks like he had his eventual design basically down in number two/three. In fact, that one could easily be a different design of Breen ship. Probably smaller, I'd say...

Actually Sol, according to "The Biology of Star Trek", it would be extremely unlikely for an extraterrestrial vertebrate lifeform to develop assymetrically. Has to do with fetal development, IIRC.

Wow! I'm really looking forward to get the Magazine myself.
While I can accept the asymmetry, there is only one thing that annoys me: All alien ships have no windows at all lately. It is obvious that this is intended to avoid scaling problems, but I wouldn't call this realistic, even if it's a battleship.
I haven't seen the Breen battleship on TV, and I'm in need of a rough size figure. Any guesses?
