Much better. You might even move Korolev to the right so that he's more towards the center of the patch. As it is now, the back of Korolev's head is cut off, whereas the body of Sputnik is complete and uncovered. Covering Sputnik slightly with Korolev wouldn't hurt.

Wow. I love the red Korolev. And the arrowhead perfectly fits in the place of hammer and sickle.

I had to flip back & forth to figure out what was different. That slight change in size of Korolev's head and Sputnik is just about perfect, making Korolev the definite focus of the patch.

So what's AD CUSTODIO TERRA mean? To Protect Earth, or something similar?

Well even Earth's custard need protecting. Everyone knows Romulans react to custard like a tribble reacts to Klingons, what do you think started the war in the first place?

No no, it was thrown pretty good. Hence the shooting and war-ness

I like that new SF Academy badge! Looks symbolic, like the Academy is a road to the future, or some cheesy crap like that. And it's nice to see a different take on it other than the usual view of the bridge.

Great work!

The correct phrase would be:
"AD CUSTODIAM TERRAE"
