You're right, it was the telepathy he used.. My excuse; I've had a very busy week with no sleep.
As for Matt not hearing Thompson, I suppose Thompson's already had a lot of experience with Heroes, a few seconds earlier he missed out on a perfect shot at Bennett, so he made his mind go blank.
