Yes, I see how that was worded confusingly. Perhaps I should have said "Why is turning this book into a movie so Earth-shatteringly necessary?".

It's not, though I would like to see it. What bothers me is the attitude of Hollywood.
I don't know if Card should've pulled out or not. It would be totally up to him. It's his work they're adapting. If he felt that their changes would be too much I wouldn't blame him at all for holding out.

Because it will make him lots and lots of monkey?
Or, to be less cynical, perhaps he just wants a larger selection of the population to enjoy his work.

It isn't as though I haven't met a lot of people. Goodness knows it isn't that. It isn't just that... it isn't... it's... it's despicable.

I'm a few chapters into Shaddow of Hegemon and a great deal of attention is put into the fact that earth is still devided by countries. The fact that these kids are from all over the world is a major plot point and cant be overlooked.
On the otherhand, tossing in a bunch of races like that reminds me of the discustingly PC "captian planet" cartoon from the late 80's.
Either way, the story of Ender's Game and Shaddow and now Hegemon is not one you can easily screw up. I would reccomend this book series to almost anyone.
Ive heard the "sequels" are ass though.

I would respond to that, but I really don't think I could do it justice...
Proteus: Shadow of the Hegemonis a sequel. And, yes, it was alright. So was Ender's Shadow. I'll assume the "ass" ones you mean are the Speaker for the Dead-Xenocide-Children of the Mind set? Those really weren't all that great, IMO.

"And, really, science fiction is the 20th century anyway, ground up and spit back to us in hyperkinetic form. Lord knows what we'll do for reading material now, though."
Well, if the sf genre turns into cyberpunk, I for one will be turning to porn or westerns.

Eh? Cyberpunk is so '80s. Totally obsolete. Especially since most science fiction stories using cyberpunk tropes would just be plain old fiction now.

It's about 10 years since I read EG, and about a year since I read SFTD; haven't gone any further than that. So I'm a bit out of the loop. But what I do know is, they'll probably be hoping it'll be "Harry Potter in Space," and accordingly only about five kids will have any dialogue. So most of the other kids will be background decoration and nothing more, but it seems to be imprtant to the producers that they be mostly-white background decoration.
