I believe the real reason for the Defiant's fate was caused by a transfer of Vic Fontaine's programs into the Defiant's computer.

Well, it was a good ship. But the fact that they are getting another (probably identical, except for the lack of a cloaking device) ship eliminates most of the sorrow I would otherwise feel. Unless, of course, someone important dies with the ship.....
