Why would it be another Defiant? The only examples of newly comissioned ships keeping to their old classes are the Defiant and Enterprise A. Both unique circumstances of a fallen "hero" ship being replaced to accomidate the needs of the surviving command crew. That sure doesnt apply to the Valiant or "dead Squad.
A Soverign class USS Valiantsounds fine to me.

well, there's no evidence to the contrary either.. there is fandom speculation about several ships of the Excelsior or Connie class that had 'replacements'.. and also, IRL, they keep making the Enterprise an aircraft carrier rather than assigning the name to another vastly different type of ship..
i kinda like it as a Sovereign better, myself.. i was just saying.

The US Navy's policy on naming is NOT that of starfleet. Otherwise we'd see lots of starships named after Federation Presidents. And that would just be silly.

For some reason I used Monarch as the name of my Nebularised Sovereign, about 5 years ago. . . I can't remember why now. Galaxy, Nebula; Sovereign, Monarch: I should have used Princeling or something like that. 8)

Our (the Royal Navy's) Enterprise is currently a survey vessel.

There's a Royal navy? Really, I thought you guys gave up all that stuff now that you're our colony... (ducks the thrown objects, barrelrolls and runs for the door...!)

No, that's Tony's plan - it hasn't quite happened yet.
I think he's currently negotiating how many senators we get or something.

Starfleet's, at least in Modern Trek, naming and numbering policy doesn't make as much sense as the US Navy's.
But in all fairness, the Navy seems to be abandoning much of it's naming conventions as seen in the controversy of naming the next aircraft carrier to be built after a currently-living ex-president, George Bush.

Y'know, that's weird. The US is the country that replaces the letter "s" with "z" in works. Prioratize - prioratise, recognize - recognise, and, er, others that I can never remember.
But this example goes the other way around. And is that HMS Enterprize a real ship?

It isn't as though I haven't met a lot of people. Goodness knows it isn't that. It isn't just that... it isn't... it's... it's despicable.
