How does one get a screen capture of a desktop?

The print screen key, and then pasting in an image program.

Charles, I use the Flare Upload. Just one question, though: how come it won't let me upload .PNG files?
Anyway, back to the topic at hand, I don't do a whole lot of messing around with my desktop. My desktop looks like this. It's been that way since January 1998. As I said, I don't mess with it.
A couple months ago, a friend and I were competing to see who was the most obsessed with Lexa Doig. I won, in part, by changing my desktop and ICQ and WinAmp skins to look like this.

And to ensure this post is content-rich and thus valuable in the new new economy, Sol's desktop, annotated edition:
My Computer: My computer. My Documents: My documents. Recycle Bin: A misleading metaphor for deletion. Games: This folder contains lots of those "Amusements for the Agoraphobic" collections Microsoft likes to put out. Klondike, Tetris, that game with the tiles and the matching, and so on. This folder may also contain a SNES emulator. Muzac: Cunningly disguised downloaded music! Full of purposefully ha ha songs. Not my favorite music folder ever. Sims: The Sims. Skittish: The album Skittish, by Mike Doughty. TMBG mp3: Right, ok, I'll get to the non-obvious ones. aesthetic: A very, very short paper on an album I like and why. bleah: Two pages of an as yet far from finished story about fast-talking detectives. d2-bncrk: NOT a Diablo II Battle.net crack. despair: A "journal comparison exercise" from a class called "Judaism, Christianity, Islam." Emperor: Battle for Dune: A game in which I battle for Dune. From time to time. ethic2: Why is this still here? Anyway, an unentertaining "case analysis" regarding the issue of torture. ethicpaper: An even less entertaining "compare and contrast" exercise. About abortion. Wee! evolution: This file contains three Flameboard threads about the aforementioned topic that I once thought I wanted to save, a tiny attempt at doing a very sad "post DS9" timeline, and notes on a novel I would like to write. Four notes, in fact, which I shall share because I hope one of you will write it for me and then give me the fame/money/author groupies:
quote: professional relationship breakers the continuity of consciousness problem people who don't believe in the universal nature of math/science immigration
film: A paper about what Aristotle thought about the meaning of art. film2: Something from film class. Don't remind me. How is Raise the Red Lantern a traditional Chinese film? That was an hour and forty minutes every two days that I'll never get back. The class, that is, not the film. film3: The same document as film, only with a "Works Cited" page attached. The hell? horrid: A paper entitled "Gnosticism and the Early Christian response to heresy." Intel Create & Share through Internet Test Call: annoying shortcuts installed by my webcam which I haven't removed due to laziness. New Text Document: I'm not even going to try to detail this one. Uh, it includes Enterprise ratings, song lyrics (mine and others), and yet more story ideas. nonfiction3: A lengthy and personally important essay I wrote. Oni: You can make her break backs and snap necks! operation: A very short play about the aftermath of a foggy medical procedure. prepatch.log: I don't know. Possibly a prepatch log. Of things which have since changed. Due to a patch. Red Alert 2: But not that tricky Yuri's Revenge. Shortcut to Diablo II: Not cracked. sizer: A paper on The Name of The Rose. sizer2: My attempt to define art. Wordy. Mentions Neanderthals. Not good. But I got an A, so ha ha ha, school! sizer3: Yet another brief assignment for my Aesthetics class. WinMX: I never did get this to work very well. The post-Napster world has left me cold. Dungeon Seige: Entertaining, but not really life-changing. I haven't tried the single player yet, for instance.
Uh, ok, this is far less fun than I thought it would be. Still, press on, eh? I guess?
Taskbar shortcuts, from the left: IE Show me the Desktop, Cruise! Quake III The Sims Age of Empires II StarCraft Star Trek: Armada Diablo Unreal Tournament Elite Force Elite Force multiplayer Rune Quicktime RealPlayer Fallout
I do not play all of these games regularly. For instance, Rune.

Sol who is that drawing by? It looks Escher-esque. Did he draw skulls reflected in irises? I know he did the self-portrait with him holding the sphere.
Captain Mike - why so much stuff!?!
Who's was the Bender one - I like that But you have 1250Mb or RAM!?! I'm looking into getting a new 'puter is that what I should aim for or is 256 good enough?
You know you could really freak someone out (like at the library) by setting one of these desktop pictures as the windows back-ground picture! LOL!
Am I the only one still using Windows 95!?!
Oh, what a delightful message I got from Flare Upload
"I find it highly unlikely it took you more than ten minutes to select a file" - it's giving me lip!!
